River of No Return

One Thursday per month, Palace offers a “cinema classic” to watch or rewatch on the big screen.

An “outstanding western”, according to Jean Tulard, directed by Otto Preminger in 1954.
It is the filmmaker’s only western, and at the same time a beautiful, nostalgic farewell to a genre in which he would surely have excelled.

Hired by 20th Century Fox, Preminger was required to shoot using the brand-new Cinemascope process, a revolutionary format whose screen—twice as wide as before—completely transformed over half a century of spatial composition in cinema.
Together with cinematographer Joseph LaShelle, he sought to master this new technique, which would soon become the definitive format for westerns.

The Palace invites you to (re)discover this historic moment in film history through a rare 35 mm print of River of No Return — a classic western with an unforgettable score, presented in its original format, in Cinemascope, and in the vibrant hues of Technicolor.

Jean-Pierre Verscheure, curator and specialist in the history of cinema techniques, along with Fabrice du Welz, Belgian director and screenwriter, will present this copy.
