Professor Isaac Borg is traveling to Lund to receive an award in recognition of his distinguished career as a physician. The night before, he has a strange dream that prompts him to drive across the country instead of flying. His daughter-in-law Marianne, who has left home to get some distance from her husband, decides to join him on the trip. During the trip, Isaac reminisces about various events that have shaped his life.
