A display of archival materials focusing on TOUTE UNE NUIT (A Whole Night) by Chantal Akerman

From 2 October to 6 November 2022

It all started with a discussion around the release of the restored copy of Toute une nuit, to mark the film’s fortieth anniversary. The Chantal Akerman Foundation told us that there was a collection of documents from that time relating to the film: script, notes, letters, shooting schedule, press cuttings, promotional material etc. Pages, fragments and images that may seem insignificant in isolation, yet when brought together they tell a story, for those willing to engage a bit of imagination. From a few ideas scribbled on a piece of paper to box office statistics, from production files to scathing reviews, it is possible to piece together a film. Chantal Akerman had a gift for finding, in the most ordinary situations, what connected them to larger themes. These archives, where the everyday met the incidental, evoked a period, a craft, an industry and, in their own way, shed some light on the darkness of the night.
